Humans have free will. Free will means that you have a CHOICE to continue drinking or not to drink. It’s not a disease, its just a lack of personal responsibility.
Bottom Line: If someone commits a crime, let’s say a DUI, and we put them in jail then guess what, they won’t have access to alcohol so what happens to those people? They don’t depend on alcohol so how do they “cope”?

Ah…I see – sort of like being a troll is a personal choice, too.
I believe it’s a weakness. There may be some genetic disposition, but it should be avoided if it’s in the family.
That would be like saying depression (or eating disorders, schizophrenia and more.) is a choice. :S
blah blah blah.. find something of importance in life.
I agree its a disorder. Alcoholics crave alcohol, they feel they ‘need’ it
It is a disease though? Free will has to do with it in the recovery process but it is most certainly a disease. Some people once they begin drinking develop a dependency on it. One cannot know that this will happen until one starts drinking. It is also is more likely for children of alcoholics to develop alcoholism indicating that it is hereditary. So should everyone just never pick up a drink on the off chance they will become dependent on it? Alcohol recovery is can be very dangerous if the person was a very heavy drinker it can also be deadly. I am the child of an alcoholic who is also a very responsible man who did everything he could to stop drinking. It is a very difficult process. I suggest that you learn more about it and not ask ignorant questions especially on a difficult to define issue.
I think it comes down to how open minded you are to illness’.
And how do they cope? Who knows, alcoholics aren’t the same.
You might as well say mentally ill individuals are putting it on as alcoholism is also a mental illness where you put the need into an object just so happens they reach for the bottle and not a packet of pills. Depression, now that is one complex illness, most alcoholics turn to alcohol for the feeling it gives them. It makes them feel “better” in a sense. It links in with many mental illness’ and for people to say these kinds of things is extremely horrific that not everyone understands the line of what we have choices over and what we have no choice over. No one asks for bad feelings, we all get them. It’s called life. I suggest you do some research on alcoholism before you shun it to be the persons own fault.
You really think they don’t have alcohol in prison? Son they have access to heroine in prison…they sure as heck have access to booze. Toilet Bowl Hooch is a popular drink for lifers.
Anyway, I’m to sure if it is a disease or not anymore. I used to agree with you…now I just say it doesn’t matter if it is or isn’t. What matters is how do we prevent it. Personally, I support creating a national education program for high school students or college freshman. Make it a required course like sex ed or drug education. Teach our kids about the pros and cons of alcohol and how to be responsible early. Studies show that keeping alcohol in the light and not hiding it away from kids is the best preventative measure for avoiding abuse later in life.
