AA used it as their symbol for many years and freely ‘allowed’ people to use it for AA-related jewelery, coins, and odds & ends. AA believed they owned it. In the 80s, they attempted to take back the rights to the symbol only to find out they never possessed them.
AA spent around $180,000 on legal fees before they figured out they were going to lose.
