Not in itself. Otherwise, SSDI would be bankrupt. However, I have case managed people in a mental health capacity who’s drinking ravaged their bodies and judgment-but their disability tended to be based on the damage and destruction of their organism, not their need to drink compulsively.

    Probably not

No it is not. Being an alcoholic is a lifestyle choice, not a disability. Nobody puts a gun to your head and orders you to down that case of PBR.

  5. Teddy & Chiliswoman says:

Yes and no. Alcoholism is not the disability but it can be the cause of the disability. A lifelong alcoholic whose liver has been destroyed by alcohol can get benefits.

We get questions from time to time about that. Drugs abused isn’t a disability either. Some people will criticized people for collecting Social Security for that claim.

No. In fact disabilities that were directly caused by alcohol.drug abuse, cannot be approved

No. Claims for people who are addicted to alcohol or drugs are denied unless they have another severe disabling condition. If someone is getting Social Security or SSI disability and they are a drug addict or alcoholic it is in spite of their addiction not because of it. Once upon a time (in the 1980s) these claims were approved but then Congress passed a law stating that they would no longer be entitled. Social Security reviewed every single file where a person was approved for either or both of these conditions and benefits were terminated left and right. So unless you have some other severely disabling condition save yourself the trouble and don’t bother contacting Social Security.

It is in Australia and so is drug addiction.
